Our Story

stoPD is a bi-coastal, non-profit organization that started operating under the name of Rock Steady Boxing NY/LA in 2014. The organization  was founded by Dr. Roberta Marongiu, neuroscientist and instructor at Weill Cornell Medical College, Alex Montaldo, stage and film actor based in New York City and Los Angeles, and Kathleen Glick, entrepreneur and owner of the independent production company Asterian Films.

It all started over two years ago when Roberta witnessed a Rock Steady Boxing demonstration at the World Parkinson’s Conference in Montreal. She was so impressed by the dynamic and positive nature of the program and how effective it was on both a physical and psychological level. She called her husband Alex right away to share her excitement, and the first seeds of stoPD were planted.

Alex signed on in a heartbeat, and before anyone knew it he was on a plane to Indianapolis to take the Rock Steady Boxing training. Back in New York, the excitement spread to Kathleen Glick. Without hesitation, Kathleen decided to join the fight against Parkinson’s.

In 2016, Alex and Roberta decided to extend the fighting spirit of boxing into a much more comprehensive vision. They recognized the potential of the program created in Indianapolis and wanted to improve upon it, utilizing the unique combination of their backgrounds.

stoPD is the result of these last two years of daily work within the Parkinson’s community. It marries a rigorous scientific approach to the disease with intense physical activity and psychological support. stoPD is an acronym that stands for support and training to overcome Parkinson’s disease.
